The Basics
How Blackjack Works
The objective is straightforward: get a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer, without exceeding 21. Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10. Aces count as either 1 or 11, whichever is more favorable.
A "blackjack" — an Ace plus any 10-value card on the initial deal — pays 3:2 at most phiery tables. Winning a standard hand pays 1:1. If you and the dealer tie, it's a push and your bet is returned. The dealer must hit on 16 or less and stand on 17 or more. That predictability is precisely what makes basic strategy so effective.
Hit
Request another card from the dealer. You can hit as many times as you like until you stand or bust (exceed 21).
Stand
